Isadora Duncan went through many hardships in her life. First, when she was little, her father left her family and moved away without any notice. Since only her father was left to fully support her family, they became extremely poor. Later in life, her two children drowned while they were under the supervision of their English nanny. She also divorced her husband, Sergei Esenin, and he committed suicide shortly after that. Isadora Duncan died when her scarf was caught in the wheels of a speeding Bugatti sports car in Nice, France. Her life was definitely a tragic one at times.

The committee that chooses the winner of this award, the Isadora Duncan Dance Awards Committee, bases their decision on performances within the previous twelve months. The committee consists of choreographers, dancers, critics, arts administrators, writers, and teachers. The Isadora Duncan Dance Award has been awarded for the past eighteen years.

Along with the dance award, there is an Isadora Duncan Dance Foundation, which shows the world how much she contributed to the world of dance. It keeps Duncan’s dance type alive. Also, dance studios around the world, including the studios Isadora herself set up, use her dance technique in their everyday classes. The world will never forget this "woman warrior" and her amazing achievements.
