Shirin Ebadi was born in Hamedan, Iran, in 1947. Her family moved her to Tehran when she was one year old, and it was there that she started her education. In 1971, she graduated from Tehran University with a doctorate degree in law. She was the first Iranian woman to ever hold the position of a judge in Iran. She also served many other positions in the Iranian Justice Department. Ebadi also wrote many books and published articles in the Iranian newspapers. She obtained her lawyer’s license in 1992 and created her own practice.

Shirin Ebadi is known for encouraging nonviolent solutions for extremely serious court cases. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for “her efforts for democracy and human rights.” (From http://nobelprize.org/peace/laureates/2003/) Today, Shirin Ebadi lives with her husband and her two daughters, one age 23, the other age 20. She works as a lawyer and also teaches at different universities.
