Honoring Women Who Fought Their Way to Greatness

Dona de Erauso - The Lieutenant Nun

Dona Catalina de Erauso had to overcome many challenges to achieve what she did. First, in Spain, where she lived, women were often treated very badly and had no importance. They mostly grew up in the convent to become nuns. Not only did she run away from the nunnery, she disguised herself as a man just to join the army. No other Spanish woman had ever run away from a convent and joined the army before Dona Catalina de Erauso.

While she was in the New World, she had to keep herself from being noticed as a woman. This was a hard challenge to pull off because when she got injured and had to be taken care of by the doctors, she had to stay dressed. Eventually, this was her downfall. She was sent back to Spain to remain in exile.

She knew that the penalty of her actions was death, but she managed to avoid this sentence by getting a petition signed by the King of Spain. This was a huge accomplishment because no one had ever escaped the death penalty like she did. She ended up living a full life, even writing her own autobiography.
