Susan G. Komen was a beautiful, kind, and popular person whose life was suddenly filled with challenges. At the age of 33, Susan found a lump in her breast that turned out to be cancerous. She lived in a small town where there were not many treatment choices. She and her family did not know much about breast cancer at the time and they foolishly listened to their family physician who had treated them all of their lives. He suggested a mastectomy and the family called in a surgeon. The surgeon agreed to do the mastectomy and said that he could cure her. This was not a wise thing to say as no doctor can say for certain that they can cure a patient of cancer forever because it is so unpredictable. The surgeon performed the mastectomy and pronounced Susan cured.

Five months later Susan found another lump under her arm. She went to the Mayo Clinic where she had to go through the intense pain of radiation. She then went to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center where she went through chemotherapy. She lost her hair and was nauseated the majority of the time. She remained brave and humorous, however. Susan also hated having to stay in the bare, uncomfortable hospital rooms. She wanted to fix them up for all the other women who had to stay there. Her sister Nancy promised to help her fix up the rooms when she got better. But unfortunately she did not get better. Instead, she got much worse. Susan was released from MDA and died not too long after but Nancy kept her promise to Susan. She founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and now works to do whatever she can to make women sick with breast cancer more comfortable. The foundation also works to find a cure to breast cancer.
