Mary Wells was a famous singer, made lots of money, and even knew the Beatles, but her life was not always as awesome as one might think. She had hard times as well as good times. One challenge she faced as a child was dealing with spinal meningitis. This illness caused her to be temporarily paralyzed as well as partially deaf and blind in one eye. After overcoming this illness, she had to learn to walk again. This was not easy for her, but she was glad she had regained her eyesight and hearing.

In 1990, Mary was faced with another medical challenge. She was diagnosed with larynx cancer that greatly affected her singing ability. Even though she was sick, Mary still tried to help others. In 1991, Mary went to Washington D.C. to try to convince Congress to raise money for cancer research. In 1992, Mary got pneumonia and for the first time lost the fight against her illness. Mary Wells died on July 26, 1992, at Kenneth Norris Jr. Cancer Hospital.
