Gertrude Belle Elion-Nobel Prize in Medicine

Gertrude Belle Elion
Gertrude Belle Elion developed the drug 6-mercaptopurine that fights leukemia as well as several other drugs to fight diseases and help the body accept transplanted organs. She also won a Nobel Prize in Medicine and was placed in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Despite all her amazing achievements Gertrude’s life was not always easy. Her grandfather died from cancer when she was fifteen years old. His death persuaded Gertrude to dedicate her life to cancer research. It also took her a lot of time and work to learn and understand all the scientific knowledge she needed to accomplish the things she did. Gertrude did many amazing things, and without her discoveries, our medical technology would not be as good as it is today.
