Catherine the Great was a famous Empress of Russia. She achieved many things as the ruler of Russia. She was born into the royal family of Prince Christian August of Anhalt-Zerbst. Her parents named her Sophia Augusta Frederica. One day, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna invited her to come to Russia and marry Peter Feodorovich, the heir to the throne of Russia. Catherine married Peter on August 21, 1745, and became Empress of Russia. She was christened into the Orthodox Church as Ekatrina Alexeevna and began planning ways to improve Russia.
On June 28, 1762, Catherine overthrew her husband with the help of the Imperial Guard and became the ruler of Russia. The Russian Empire improved greatly and was very prosperous during her reign. She won many wars against the Ottoman Empire, gaining land with every victory. She eventually extended Russia’s border all the way to the Black Sea. On November 6, 1796, Catherine the Great, the beloved Empress of Russia, died.
