Isabella Baumfree was born in 1797, in Ulster County, New York. She was one of thirteen children born to her enslaved parents. Sadly, she was sold away from her parents when she was only eleven years old. During her time as a slave, Isabella suffered through many hardships, but her Christian faith helped her survive under such harsh conditions. Sometime during those years she was forced to marry an older slave named Thomas. She would later flee from her master with their infant son. |

Eventually Isabella landed in New York City where she would be inspired by a spiritual awaking. Baumfree would then change her name to Sojourner Truth and preach “God’s truth and plan” all through out Long Island and Connecticut. Later in her life, Truth would begin speaking about abolitionism, women's suffrage, and her life as a slave. In 1851, she gave her legendary speech which included the phrase “Ain’t I a Woman?” which is still associated with her today. |
