Juliette Gordon Low - Founder of Girl Scouts of America

Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31, 1860,the second child of William and Eleanor Gordon. “Daisy” (Juliette) spent her childhood in her home on Lafayette Square in Savannah, Georgia. She became interested in the arts when she was only a child. Juliette also loved animals. Among her favorites were dogs and birds.

When Daisy became a teenager, she was sent to a boarding school in Virginia and then a French school in New York. After graduating, she spent most of her time traveling throughout the United States and Europe.

Juliette was married on December 21, 1886, to William Low. The wedding was held at Christ Church in Savannah, Georgia. Following the wedding, the couple moved to England.

Daisy (Juliette's nickname) came back to the United States to support the Spanish-American war effort. She and her mother organized a convalescent hospital. When the war ended, Juliette moved back to England, and her wilting marriage. Her husband died in 1905 before they could be divorced.

After William's death, Juliette searched for something meaningful to do with the rest of her life. In 1911, her search ended when she met Sir Robert Baden-Dowell, the founder of Boy Scouts. She became determined to introduce Girl Guiding to the United States.

Juliette took her idea to Savannah and successfully started Girl Scouts which has now grown into the largest educational organization for girls. Sadly, she died in her home from cancer. Now she rests peacefully at the Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah.

"I realize that each year it has changed and grown until I know that, a decade from now, what I might say of it would seem like an echo of what has been instead of what is."
