Today, with all of the laws about children going to school in most parts of the world, it is hard for some girls to imagine, but there was a day in time when woman were not encouraged to go to school. In fact, many people in certain ages of history thought that a woman’s only proper place was with her family, and if she was not there then she was terribly out of place. Some even thought that women should not hold full time jobs because they believed that the working women would let their families fall apart. Frances Willard’s father held similar views about a woman's place in the world. Imagine what the world would be like if no one went to school. There would be no medicine to give to the ill and even travel would be difficult, without the highly advanced ways of transportation today. It can be presumed that even Mrs. Willard’s career would have changed dramatically if she hadn’t have continued on with her schooling, despite her father’s opposition that started from a young age. Willard’s action to stay in school, along with the same action from other women world wide, created a movement that is still going on today, because in order for women to be equal to men, they must be educated to the same degree. In some parts of the world, even today, women don’t receive the proper education. In some parts of the world girls are valued at nothing, and are even traded away from their families for cows. They also think that they can get away with it, but it is up to the rest of the world to open their eyes and hearts to help women all around the world gain a chance to gain a better future for themselves through education. Everyone can make a difference in this struggle. Even if it is only staying in school so you can help other girls get to school later, it is worth it, because Frances Willard proved all of those anti-feminine thoughts wrong. By having a very successful career outside of the home, she proved that woman can do great things when given the chance. |
