Amelia Earhart - Pioneer in Women Aviation

Amelia Beside her Plane Amelia Earhart is known as a pioneer in women’s aviation. Amelia decided that she must learn how to fly on December 28, 1920, when Frank Hawks gave her a ride in his airplane. Once she had made up her mind, nothing could stop her. She took her first flying lesson in January of 1921 and had raised enough money to buy her own plane by July of the same year. It was a two seater Kinner Airster that was bright yellow in color. Amelia named the plane “Canary” and flew 14,000 feet up into the sky, setting her first woman's record.
One day Earhart got a phone call that would change her life forever. The caller wanted to give the woman pilot a chance to fly across the entire Atlantic Ocean! Amelia could not turn down the offer. She flew from Trepassey harbor, Newfoundland to Burry Port, Wales. The event made headlines around the world. Amelia had become the first woman to fly across the enormous ocean. When she arrived back to the United States, there was a great parade in New York City in her honor, and Amelia was invited to have a reception with the President himself.

After that long flight, Amelia kept soaring high, marrying George Putman in 1931, and placing third in the Cleveland Women’s Air Derby. Together the newlyweds secretly planed for her first solo flight across the Atlantic. She completed the flight safely. Amelia thought the flight proved that men and women were equal in jobs that required intelligence, coordination, speed, coolness, and willpower.

Earhart turned 40 in 1937. She decided to take her last monumental flight; her plan was to be the first woman to fly around the world. Unfortunately, Amelia was unable to reach one of the hardest rest stops. Rescue teams were sent out, but neither Amelia nor her plane was ever found. What a sad way to end such an amazing life story!
