Honoring Women Who Fought Their Way to Greatness

Joan of Arc-"Maid of Orleans"

Joan convinced Charles that she was telling the truth. He gave her an army and some armor. She attacked the English in control of the city of Orleans and took back Orleans from the English in only ten days. Joan also defeated the English controlling Reims and stood next to Charles when he was crowned king on July 17, 1429.

In September 1429, Joan was wounded while attempting to free Paris from English control. She was captured by Burgundians a year later. Because of her visions, the English thought Joan was associated with the devil. The English tried her for heresy and witchcraft. They found her guilty and burned her at the stake in front of many people at Rowen on May 30, 1931. Joan's ashes were thrown into the Seine River.
Fourteen years later, Joan's family asked for a new trial against her. Joan was found innocent in 1456. She was made a saint in 1920. Joan is known all over the world and many monuments have been dedicated to her. She is still a mysterious figure today, however, for even in the 1400s, people said that another person had burned in her place.
