Glossary

Alias- an assumed or additional name

Adultery- voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a partner other than the lawful spouse

Aparatheid- An official policy of racial segregation formerly practiced in the Republic of South Africa, involving political, legal, and economic discrimination against nonwhites.

Asp- any of several venomous snakes of Africa, Asia, and Europe

Boycott- To abstain from or act together in abstaining from using, buying, or dealing with as an expression of protest or disfavor or as a means of coercion

Bulimia- an eating disorder , that is characterized by episodic binge eating, and then self- induced vomiting

Cancer- Any malignant growth or tumor caused by abnormal and uncontrolled cell division; it may spread to other parts of the body through the lymphatic system or the blood stream.

Chemothereapy-the treatment of cancer using specific chemical agents or drugs to kill the malignant cells and tissues

Chitons-a woolen tunic worn by men and women in ancient Greece

Choreographers- someone who creates new dances

Christened - To give a name to at baptism.

Convent-a community, especially of nuns, bound by vows to a religious life under a superior

Colon-The section of the large intestine extending from the cecum to the rectum.

Credientials- that which entitles one to confidence, credit, or authority

Disinheriteted-to exclude from inheritance or the right to inherit

Economics-The social science that deals with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services and with the theory and management of economies or economic systems.

Exile- the condition or a period of living away from one's native country

Gala-A festive occasion, especially a lavish social event or entertainment.

Geography-the study of the earth and its features and of the distribution of life on the earth, including human life and the effects of human activity

Gynecology-The branch of medicine dealing with health care for women, especially the diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the female reproductive organs.

Heiress-a woman who is an heir, especially to great wealth

Heresy- A controversial or unorthodox opinion or doctrine, as in politics, philosophy, or science.

Herpes-Any of several viral diseases causing the eruption of small blisterlike vesicles on the skin or mucous membranes

Hypocrite- a person who professes beliefs and opinions that he does not hold

Humanitarian- one who is devoted to the promotion of human welfare and the advancement of social reforms

Infantry- the branch of an army made up of units trained to fight on foot

Insane asylum-a hospital for mentally incompetent or unbalanced person

Instrumental-relating to or designed for or performed on musical instruments; "instrumental compositions,an instrumental ensemble

Lady-a general feminine title of nobility and other rank

Lieutenant-a commissioned rank in the U.S. Navy or Coast Guard

Lynching- To execute without due process of law, especially to hang, as by a mob.

Mastectomy-surgical removal of all or part of a breast,usually performed as a treatment for cancer

Muleteer- a driver of mules
