Rosa Parks has received many awards and prizes for her work to desegregate the nation. One of those awards is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Spingarn Medal; she received this award in 1979. This award is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s highest honor. Ordinary people nominate the recipients. They send in a biography, supporting information like news clippings and the nominees’ activities. In 1980 she received two awards which included the Service Award and the Martin Luther King Jr. Nonviolent Peace Prize. Eleanor Roosevelt another woman of great courage like Rosa Parks has an award called the Eleanor Roosevelt Women of Courage Award, which Rosa received in 1984. |

She continued recieving awards through out the rest of her lifetime. In 1990 for instance, Rosa Parks received the Rosa Parks Peace Prize which is named after her. The Medal of Freedom Award is an award given yearly by the president to a distinguished citizen. President Clinton awarded Rosa Parks the Medal of Freedom Award in 1996 and another award in July of 1999, the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Every two years since 1998, a gala is held to award the International Freedom Conductor Award to person who shows a large amount value for freedom in our country and world-wide. The first International Freedom Conductor Award was given to Rosa Parks in 1998 from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Rosa Parks has received many awards and has been nominated by everyone from the citizens to the president for all the awards she has received. She is admired and respected by people of all races not only for the awards she received but the work she has done for our nation. |
