Eleanor Roosevelt was a revered lady widely known for her kindness to all people no matter what their creed, race, or nationality. She was born in New York City on October 11, 1884 to the beautiful Anna Hall and Elliot Roosevelt. Sadly, her mother died in 1892 and her father was neither emotionally nor morally capable of keeping Eleanor and her younger brother, Theodore, so they went to live with their Grandmother Hall. Two years later her beloved father died. |

To increase her confidence, at age 15, she was enrolled in a well-known English boarding school. Her circle of friends included her fifth cousin once removed, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Eleanor Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt were engaged and in 1905 they were married with her uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, walking the bride down the aisle. By 1916, Eleanor had given birth to six children, with one dying in infancy. |

Her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, started his political career in 1910 as a New York State Senator, and from that time on Eleanor Roosevelt was Franklin’s “eyes and ears.” This was especially important after he was incapacitated with poliomyelitis (polio) in 1921. In 1933, Franklin was elected president. He served four terms in all. |
