The most illustrious order of St. Patrick was founded on February 5, 1783, by King George III to honor high-ranking Irish government officials. It was created to be the national order of Ireland, equivalent to the Order of the Garter and the Order of the Thistle of Scotland. It still exists, but no members remain. Its motto is “Who will separate us?” Its official insignia is a badge made with what became known as the Irish crown jewels. The order includes different ranks with each having its own badge. The order’s chapel is St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The Sovereign, or leader of the order, is the British monarch. The “Irish crown jewels” that symbolized the order were stolen and never seen again. |
