Queen Victoria of England
The Most Illustrious Order of the Star of India was founded in1861 by Queen Victoria of England to honor Indian royalty and British officers serving in India. It was created exclusively for men with the exception of currently ruling female royalty. The order included three classes of members: Knight Grand Commanders, Knight Commanders, and Companions. Its leader is, and always has been, the British monarch. Its motto is “Heaven’s light our guide.” Its emblem is the “Star of India,” which is the symbol on the flag of the viceroy of India. It is one of the most senior orders in the British order of chivalry. Elaborate costumes were worn for special occasions, including gold collars and mantles of blue satin lined with white silk. Relatives of members received position according to the importance of the member’s rank. The order has been inactive since 1947.
