Probably the most memorable violent act was in April 1765. Cadwaller Colden, The Royal Governer of New York, received a shipment of stamped papers, and riots soon broke out. He fled in fear to Fort George. The mob then captured his carrage and burned it to ashes. They wasted no time in proceeding uptown to sack the Royal Governor’s house. They also destroyed other people’s property who had bought the taxed goods. In this way they were discouraging everyone from buying the taxed English goods.
