Sons of Liberty

The Sons of Liberty were started in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1765, because of the Stamp Act, a tax enforced by the British Government on the American colonists. The Sons of Liberty were created because they thought the tax was not fair, and they wanted to stop it by using any means necessary, including violence. They publicly declared, on December 1765, that they would "go to the last extremity with their lives and fortunes to prevent the enforcement of the Stamp Act”.After 1765, there was a chapter of the Sons of Liberty brotherhood in every colony. The Boston Chapter of the group held meetings under “The Liberty Tree,” and the New York Sons held theirs at “The Liberty Pole.” They always met very late at night so they would not arouse suspicion from British supporters. They were not originally called the Sons of Liberty, but Isacc Barre, who was a member of English Parliament, came up with the name in a debate calling them, “These Sons of Liberty.” In British eyes, they were revolutionary terrorists. |
