Chivalric Orders- Order of the Thistle
Introduction St.George
The Order of the Thistle of Scotland began in 1687 under James II, King of England. It is made up of a Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies. It also includes “extra” Knights (British royal family members and foreign monarchs). Only the Sovereign grants membership, and the order is independent of the government. It is one of the three most exalted British orders of chivalry. The Order of the Thistle of Scotland pertains to Scotland, the Order of the Garter pertains to England, and the Order of St. Patrick pertains to Ireland. The order’s motto is “No one provokes me with impunity.” Its patron saint is St. Andrew. King of England James II
