The Order of St. George began in Imperial Russia and still exists today. Founded in 1769 by Catherine the Great, it was restarted in 2000 by the Russian Federation. It includes four classes of members. The official medal of the Order of St. George is the Cross of St. George. It is one of the most honored awards in Russia, second only to the Cross of St. Andrew. Only four people have achieved first rank of the Cross of St. Andrew, and many emperors have only attained fourth rank. First rank is only available to high ranking military officers. Low-ranking soldiers may receive the Cross of St. George, which is also divided into four degrees. |
