The Order of the Garter is the oldest continual national order of knighthood in the world. It is also the highest ranking of all orders in the British Honors System. It has only 25 full members. Men in the order are called Knights’ Companions, and women in the order are called Ladies’ Companions. People of royal descent of England or other countries can become what are called Supernumerary Knights and Ladies. Their symbol is a garter with their motto, “Shame on him who thinks ill of it,” spelled out in diamonds on the garter. |
