The Order of the Golden Fleece was founded by Duke Philip of Burgundy in 1430, to celebrate his marriage to the princess of Portugal, Isabella of Aviz. The order was exclusively Catholic. It was modeled after the Order of the Bath. It includes 51 members and is symbolized by the Golden Fleece of Colchis, a mythical winged ram. It has two mottos: “Not a bad reward for labor,” and “I will have no other.”
