| Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the most influential and prominent politicians during the Civil Rights Movement. He was a Baptist minister who won the Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his great achievements. Dr. King fought for “social justice,” and he did so nonviolently, unlike the Black Panthers. Martin Luther King, Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Atlanta’s Morehouse College in 1948, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. He later graduated from Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, as well as acquiring a Ph.D. from Boston University. In 1953, Dr. King married Coretta Scott, and they had 4 children. |

Dr. King was the leader of many protests. One such protest was the Montgomery Bus Boycott which began because Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus. His house was bombed because of the hostile opposition he often faced. Dr. King was later arrested during this campaign. He encouraged African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement to protest without violence. Dr. King worked with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Dr. King often gave inspiring speeches and protests, his most famous being the “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. On April 4, 1968, the day after giving a speech during the garbage strike in Memphis, Tennessee, he was assassinated while he was on the balcony of his hotel. James Earl Ray shot Dr. King in the throat and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. |
