Knight's Templar- Crusades
Pope Innocent III
The fourth crusade started in 1202 under the order of Pope Innocent III. His plan was to go through Egypt to get to Jerusalem. In this crusade, the Venetian, Doge Enrico, took control and created a city near Jerusalem named Zara. In 1204, the Muslims took over this city as well.
The fifth crusade was well thought out because the Roman Catholic Church assigned a council specifically assigned to find a way to gain control of Jerusalem. The council was named the Fourth Council of the Lateran. This crusade took place in 1219 and was somewhat successful. The Christians took over the city of Damietta which was quite a feat.
King Louis IX
In 1228, Frederick II attempted to take over the Holy Land. This crusade is interesting because the Pope did not ask for this crusade to happen. Frederick decided to try without the Church’s approval. The rest of the crusades followed this trend in which the Pope had no say so about whether or not to fight.

In the seventh crusade, Louis IX of France tried to capture Jerusalem. This crusade lasted from 1248 to 1254. His armies left from southern France and went to the Holy Land. This attempt was also unsuccessful.

In 1270, Louis IX of France attempted once more to capture Jerusalem and proved that he would not prevail. He accompanied his army and died in the Crusader Kingdom in Acre.

The ninth and final crusade found Edward I of England trying to make the last attempt towards gaining back the Holy Land. After the falls of Antioch, Tripoli, and Acre, the last cities ruled by the Christians. This crusade, too, was doomed.
