The Knights Hospitaller was founded in 1100 A.D. Much like the Knights Templar, the Hospitallers would protect Pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. They are also known to be called the following:
• Knights of Rhodes
• Knights of Malta
• Cavaliers of Malta
• Order of St. John of Jerusalem

At first the Hospitallers just cared for Pilgrims who had made it to the Holy Land, but after a while they began to help Pilgrims as they traveled. The Hospitallers built infirmaries in Jerusalem to care for the Pilgrims. |

When the Hospitallers were engaged in battle, they wore a black surcoat with a white cross. In 1312, when the Knight’s Templar dissolved, much of their property was given to the Hospitallers. As Islam grew, the Muslims finally pushed the Knights out of Jerusalem. The grand master of the Hospitallers decided that the city of Rhodes would become their new home. Since that they had ceased fighting Muslims, they began warring with the Barbary pirates. In 1522, Suleiman the Magnificent conquered Rhodes with 400 ships and 200,000 men. The Knights left and fled to Sicily. |
