The KKK’s leader is called the Grand Wizard. Nathan Bedford Forrest, the Klan’s Grand Wizard in 1868, called for the Klan to disband. Forrest said the Klan was “being perverted from its original honorable and patriotic purposes, becoming injurious instead of subservient to the public peace.” President Ulysses S. Grant put an end to the KKK with the Civil Rights Act of 1871.

The members of the Ku Klux Klan dressed to appear like ex-Confederate ghosts returning from battle. They wore long white robes with pointy white masks and covered their horses with white sheets. They also silenced their horses’ hooves. The KKK not only targeted African Americans but also Jews, Catholics, and Native Americans. They also opposed carpetbaggers ,northerners coming south to make money, and , scalawags, the nickname for white Republicans.
