In 1888, Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and Dr. William Wynn Westcott founded the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn in London, England. The fraternity was set up to become a magical fraternity. The brotherhood was the biggest influence in western occultism during the 20th century. During this time, it focused on the creation of a “magical thinking” Europe. Along with many other brotherhoods, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was based on Freemasonry. It was also based on Enochian Magic, medieval grimoires, theosophy, and Eliphas Levi. The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn was a huge influence in occult practices and in “magic” Europe because they were one of the most important magical fraternities in the world.
