Two of the first United States Freemasonry lodges were founded by the authority of the Grand Lodge of England in 1733. One was located in Boston, Massachusetts, and the other in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By the time of the American Revolution, over 150 lodges existed in the English colonies.
There are two different divisions of Freemasonry. One is the York Rite which was formed in the late 18th century. Another name for this rite is Capitular. Its members are called Royal Arch Masons. The Scottish Rite was formed in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1801.
