The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, more widely known as the Black Panthers, was a revolutionist party for African Americans in the late 1960’s in the United States. The society had a huge influence in America, but diminished because of the oppression it faced from state officials and the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation). They influenced many African Americans and others to stand up for their rights. The group fought against whites for Civil Rights, but rejected the then popular ways of fighting non-violently. One such “non-violent fighter” was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with whom the Black Panthers disagreed. Two friends, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, founded the society in 1966, in Oakland, California, in order to free, or liberate, their African American brothers during the Civil Rights era. The party believed in self-defense, as is stated in its name. The group wanted African Americans to fight back against the discrimination they faced from the whites. The group followed Malcolm X, another civil rights leader. The Black Panthers were a very controversial society. Many agreed with their ideas, but disagreed with their methods. |
