Andres Bonifacio, Valentin Diaz, Teodoro Plata, Ladislao Diwa, Deodato Arellano and a few others founded the Katipunan, formally known as Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalang na Katipunan nang manga Anak ng Bayan, on July 9, 1892, in the Philippines. It was founded in retaliation for the deportation of the Philippines national revolutionary hero, Jose Rizal. The Katipunan was founded the night of his arrest in a house on Azcarraga Street (now Claro M. Recto Avenue). During this time the Philippines was a colony of Spain, and the colonists wanted reforms made to the government. The head of this reform movement was Rizal, but when he was arrested, Bonifacio and others decided to prepare the Philippines to take up arms against Spain. They were not happy with trying for reforms anymore; consequentlythey decided to liberate the Philippines from Spanish rule entirely. |
