The hero of the Filipino Revolution and founder of the Katipunan, Andres Bonifacio was born in Manila, in 1863. When he was seven, he had to quit school because his parents died, and he needed to support his brothers and sisters. By 1885, Andres had become a fierce supporter of Filipino freedom. When the original Filipino hero Jose Rizal began the Liga Filipina in 1892, Andres was one of the first to join. Once Rizal was captured, Bonifacio decided the only way to be freed was to fight. On July 7, 1892, Andres created the Katipunan. He based it on Masonic rituals so that the group not only had discipline and rules but remained secretive. This helped the community and gathered the support of his fellow Filipinos. When Jose Rizal was executed in 1896, Bonifacio declared the Philippines independent from Spanish rule. The Spaniards pursued him, and he fled into hiding. Meanwhile, Emilio Aguinaldo took over the Filipino Army. When Bonifacio came out of hiding, he tried to retake control of the Katipunan, but Aguinaldo had him arrested. Filipino war hero Andres Bonifacio was executed under the orders of Emilio Aguinaldo on May 10, 1897. |
