culture, what is the most important text that can be
studied?
Many years ago, in about 610 AD,
Muhammad began reciting his version, his belief, of the divine
origin. Originally, this proclamation was memorized by his
followers, but was written down after Muhammad’s death in 632
AD. The resulting book is commonly known as the Koran, or
“The Recitation.”

In many homes belonging to Islamic
people, there are draperies and other small objects with religious
significance. Often kept in a special case, many families display
their copy of the Koran. However, there are many different
ornaments used in the many different holidays of Islamic
people.

Islam?
Unlike many religions, converting to
Islam is relatively simple. Many individuals who are interested
have normally done research on at least the basics of the religion,
and no course in the religion is needed or expected. Before
entering themselves into a very brief ceremony designated to induct
the person into Islam, he must first purify himself. Included, one
must recite the shahadah. This states that Muhammad is the
messanger of Allah and Allah is the only god.
What role did Muhammad play in
Islamic history?
Muhammad was the founder of Islam. One
day as he was meditating in a cave, the angel Gabriel came to him.
After that night, Muhammad preached to many people about Allah, or
God, and they followed him. Though Mauhammad died long ago, his
teachings are still a major influence in Islamic
culture.
During Ramadan, does one not eat at
all?
During Ramadan, one must only not eat
during the day. After that, most Muslims break their fast
with dates and eat a feast, or large dinner.
