The Western Wall Men praying at the Western Wall
The Western Wall is a most holy place for the Jewish people. It was not a part of either the First or Second Temple, but was one of four retaining walls that surrounded the Temple Mount. Built by Herod the Great in order to enlarge the area of the Temple complex, it was the only thing left by the Romans when they destroyed the temple in AD 70. The Western Wall used to be known as the "Wailing Wall." The main center was created as an place of prayer when Israel captured the Old City in 1967. Sometimes, tens of thousands of people come here for prayer.
