Jewish Symbols: Workshop 12J
Star of David
The Star of David is an important symbol to the Jewish people. This symbol is very new to the Jewish religion. It was used in history but did not become a symbol until recently. It is supposed to represent the star on the Shield of David, but there is no evidence supporting this fact. This mark is also known as Magen David, Hebrew for Shield of David. In the Holocaust, Jews were marked with this symbol so they could be recognized as Jews. Most of the images of the star are portrayed as two intertwined triangles. This symbol is also shown on the Israeli flag.
One of the most visible symbols of a Jewish person the the small circular skullcap called a yarmulke which is worn by many Jewish man and boys.

A mezusah ("doorpost") is often located at the front door of a Jewish home. The Jewish people touch this small container of scripture upon entering their homes.

The menorah means "an object which emits light." In the Jewish religion, the menorah often is a seven, eight, or nine branched candle holder which is featured during the observance of Hanukkah.
