Jewish People: Workshop 9J
Orthodox Jews in black
Known today as Jews, the people during biblical times were called Hebrews, or Israelites. Their religious leaders are called rabbis. Rabbis help the Jewish people adhere to the rules of the Jewish religion. These rules and standards can be found in the Torah , the Ten Commandments, and the 13 Articles of Faith.
A Jewish Rabbi
In biblical times, leaders of the Jewish religion were known as Patriarchs. In biblical times, God chose certain people to help guide his chosen people and help them remain faithful to His commandments.
Most Jewish people today live very religious lives. Their days are focused on their religious beliefs and customs. However there are some people who call themselves Jews but do not practice the religious traditions of Judaism. These people are called "non-religious Jews." Their identification with Judaism is more cultural than religious. They feel that their ethnic relationship to Judaism is as important as the religious aspect of Judaism. This cultural identification with a religion is not just limited to Jewish people. It is also true of some Muslims, Buddhists, and Christians, also.
