Moses, another great
patriarch, led the Israelites out of Egypt in order to escape from
the slavery of the pharaoh. God demonstrated his power by parting
the Red Sea in order to allow them to escape from the Egyptian
soldiers . Once the Israelites were across the Red Sea, the
Egyptians who were following them drowned when the sea came back
together. |

Later when the
Israelites camped out at Mount Sinai, God gave Moses the
Ten
Commandments. These are the
laws of the Jews which form the basis of the ethical standards of
Jewish life. To keep the tablets safe, Moses had a special
container built to put them in called the Arc of the
Covenant. |
|
| The Ark
was carried by priests and was always wrapped up so that it was
carefully concealed even from the men who carried it. The Ark was
carried into battles such as the Battle of Jerico, but it was
eventually captured by the Philistines. So much misfortune happened
to the Philistines while they had the Ark that it was returned to
the Israelites. Eventually King David built a temple for the Ark.
Finally the Ark disappeared when the Babylonians destroyed
Jerusalem and David's temple. Many historians believe that
Nebuchadnezzar took and destroyed the Ark. Others believe that the
Ark was removed by divine intervention and hidden. Whatever
happened, it was not in the Second Temple that was rebuilt to
replace the King David's Temple. |
