A
Patriarch is an"early biblical character regarded as a father of
the human race." There are many Jewish patriarchs. Some of the
these Patriarchs are Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Jacob’s twelve
sons. The stories of these people are found in the book of
Genesis. The twelve sons of Jacob became the twelve tribes
of Israel. |

| In
Genesis, God makes a promise to Abraham that he would have a
great nation and many children. Abraham lived in Ur or Mesopotamia,
which is present day Iraq. He was to obey a command from God and
travel to the "promised land" of Canaan. |

According to the book of Genesis, even
though God had promised Abraham many children, his wife was not
able to have a baby. The
story goes on to say that when Abraham's wife finally became
pregnant at ninety years old, God allowed her to have a baby.
Abraham was 100 years old when the baby was born. The baby’s
name was Isaac. |

When Isaac
was a young boy, his father took him to the mountains because God
told him to sacrifice Isaac, his only and beloved son.
Because Abraham's faith
was so strong in God, he was willing to put Isaac to death. But,
according to Genesis, God saw the faith of Abraham and sent
a ram to take the place of Isaac. |
