Jewish Beliefs: Workshop 2J

Jews believe and live by the Torah, the Hebrew Bible, a book that consists of the first five books of the Christian Bible's Old Testament. The Jewish people agree that the Torah was written by humans, yet it is still holds great importance to the Jewish religion. The Torah
A small portion of the Torah The God of the Hebrew Bible, Yahweh, is a God who is devoted to his people. He has a "covenant" with his people which promised blessings to those who are faithful to him and curses to those who are unfaithful.
God revealed the Law to Moses at Mount Sinai. An abbreviated version, known as the Ten Commandments or the Decalogue, is the basis of the ethical standards of the Jewish people. The Ten Commandments - The Decalogue
  1. You shall have no other gods before me.
  2. You shall not make unto yourself any graven image.
  3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.
  4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother.
  6. You shall not kill.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal.
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
  10. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Jews have a set group of standards that Rabbi Maimonides created in the 1100's. These set standards are called " The 13 Articles of Faith". All Jews are to abide by these rules.

The 13 Articles of Faith

  1. God is real.
  2. God is one.
  3. God is Spiritual.
  4. God is everlasting.
  5. All prayers and worship go to God.
  6. The prophets are true.
  7. The greatest was Moses.
  8. The Written and Oral Torah were given to Moses on Mount Sinai.
  9. There is no other Torah.
  10. God knows everything about man.
  11. God will reward the good and punish the wicked.
  12. The Messiah is going to come.
  13. The dead will resurrect.
