The Crescent Moon is actually older than Islam. Though scientists cannot be certain, they think that the symbol originated in Asia and Siberia for use in worship of ancient celestial gods. Some think that it was used to worship the Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis or the Carthaginian goddess, Tanit.

The Crescent Moon was first featured on the city of Byzantium’s flag. However, it was not until 1453 that Islam adopted the Crescent Moon as their symbol. Previously, Muslims and their leaders used plain flags which were usually colored black, green, or white.
