Indus River
Valley Civilization

The ancient
Indus civilization developed around 3000 B.C.E. It had two major
cities, known as Harappa and Mohenjo Daro. Unfortunately, not much is known about this
civilization as their language has not yet been translated.
However, artifacts which have been found, such as tablets and
figurines, suggest an early development of the religion commonly
known as Hinduism. Apparently, the religion was based on the
worship of nature and the many gods and goddesses associated with
it. One of the many animals worshiped was the bull, and to this
day, cows are considered sacred in Indus and other Hindu
nations.

As one will learn in
the Beliefs section of this site, there were many beliefs of this
ancient civilization.Water was especially thought to be sacred and
holy. Considering the fact that the ancient Hindu people lived near
the Indus River itself, they probably had a very firm belief in the
holiness of running water.
