Water and Fire
According to Hindu philosophers, everything must be balanced in order for things to be
equal, in nature and in everyday life. One such example is the
balance between fire and water.
Fire, a masculine element, offsets water, a feminine element. Each
morning, Hindu people worship water and fire, as they are essential
in the balance of all existence. Ladles engraved with elaborate
carvings of symbols and deities are used to pour holy water. Fire
symbolizes the renewal of one's devotion and of reaching out to the
gods. Waving a lamp of burning incense in front of a statue
representing a deity embodies the symbolism of the meeting of the
gods.
