Christian Places of Worship: Workshop 8C
Through out history, churches were built as places beautiful of worship. These buildings vary in size and range from the intricately designed to the small and simple. Many churches have stained glass windows that portray scenes from the Bible, or the holy scriptures of Christianity. It is tradition to some that the entrance to a Church should face the west. Some other Churches face the east. St. John's Cathedral
An altar during Easter The point of this is symbolism. Facing the east symbolizes facing away from the darkness, and looking into the light. The sun sets in the west and rises in the east. At the opposite end of the church sits the altar. An altar is a table with a cross in the middle and two candles placed on either side. In some denominations, a bouquet of flowers is purchased by a member of the church in honor or in memory of a close friend or family member.
Many Christians choose to separate themselves from the outer world and give their whole selves to God. They spend their days studying scriptures. They give up everything that they have. The men who choose to do this become monks, and the women who choose to do this become nuns. Stained glass window
