Easter
In the Christian churches, the 40 day
period before Easter is called Lent.
Many Christians will find one thing to give up for Lent. Many times
people will give up things like caffeine or candy for Lent. The
reason people give up things is so they can become closer to God by
sacrificing something that is important to them. The Sunday before
Easter is called Palm
Sunday. This is the day that Jesus
entered Jerusalem, and people laid down palm branches and clothing
in Jesus' path welcoming Him into the city. The Thursday before
Good Friday was the day of the Last Supper, where Jesus told his
disciples that he was going to die for their sins. He broke the
bread and told them "This is my body, which is broken for
you.” When he poured the wine, he told them “This is my
blood, which is poured out for you." Then he washed their feet. The
following Friday is called Good Friday. This is the day that Jesus was crucified and
died on the cross. Christians mourn on this day, but celebrate on
Easter Sunday. This day celebrates the resurrection of Jesus from
the dead. The Pentecost is the seventh Sunday after Easter. This
is the day that is the celebration of the Holy Spirit, the third
part of the Holy Trinity, descended upon the disciples, Jesus'
followers.
