Roanoke

| Roanoke was originally founded by England's Sir Walter Raleigh. The main purpose of his trip to the New World was to make Roanoke Island a military colony. In fact, England sent seven ships full of soldiers on this trip. |

| Due to the expedtion's encountering too many problems, this first attempt at settling a colony was unsuccessful.

In 1587, Raleigh sent another expedition. This time, he had planned to avoid the Roanoke area and to arrive near Chesapeake Bay. For unknown reasons, the settlers decided to settle in Roanoke again.
