In the town of Herculanum, most victims of Mount Vesuvius' eruption were able to escape. The people of Herculanum saw the cloud of pyroclastic flow over their heads and realized they were on the verge of death. The people of Pompeii were less fortunate. However dangerous the city of Pompeii's situation was, most of the people could have lived. Many people wasted time by trying to rescue some of their possesions. Others were so panicked that they wandered to and fro cluelessly in the dark.
