Helen of Troy
Helen of Greece was a beautiful woman. Her nickname was "Lady of Sorrows." It was thought that she was the daughter of Zeus and Leda, even though Zeus and Leda were fictional characters. Helen grew up in Sparta, Greece. She fell in love with Menelaus. Helen had been abducted many times, but when she married Menelaus, her suitors made an oath to bring Helen back if she were abducted again. When Paris abducted Helen, the suitors stuck to their oath to rescue her and that was the main cause of the Trojan War.
A portrait of Helen
Paris and Helen planned to marry and have children. Paris, however, died in the Trojan War. Helen then married Deiphobus I. "... when Paris died, and earth concealed his corpse, I should have left his house and sought the Argive fleet, since my marriage was no longer in the hands of gods. That was what I was eager to do; and the warders on the towers and watchmen on the walls can bear me witness, for often they found me seeking to let myself down stealthily by cords from the battlements, but there was that new husband, Deiphobus, that carried me off by force to be his wife ..." A famous quote said to be to Hecabe I from Helen.
