Sophia and Heinrich set out to find the ancient city of Troy. The Schliemanns began work with a compass and a copy of the Illiad by Homer. They came to a hill called Hissarlik. In 1871, Schliemann got the permission to excavate there. Schliemann had a problem, though. Frank Calvert, an archeologist, owned part of Hissarlik Hill. They compromised and Frank Calvert got an equal share of what lay underneath the hill. Heinrich classified everything he found by drawing pictures. In 1872, he found the relief of Helios, the sun god. In 1873, he found that cities had been located on that site. The cities were built in levels. Schliemann convinced himself there was a treasure buried in the city. |
