Hamilcar Barca
Hamilcar Barca was an aristocrat and a general in the Carthaginian Army. After conquering Spain in 237 BCE., he planned an attack on Rome. He instilled a deep hatred towards Rome in his two sons, Hannibal and Hasdrubal who would also become great generals.
A Coin of Hamilcar
Hamilcar fought against Rome for nine years but did not get to see its destruction. During a battle, he drowned in the floodwaters of the Jucar River. Hamilcar Barca was considered Carthage's greatest general and statesman until his death when his son Hannibal took his place.
