Gone But Not Forgotten

Downfall of Alexandria

A Muslim Symbol Alexandria was once a very large and beautiful city before the many attacks on the city by its enemies. When Alexandria was taken by the Romans, the Jews revolted and many of the Jews were massacred by the Romans. At a later date, the Roman emperor tried to kill off all the male population in Alexandria. Another time Muslims ransacked the city and burned it to the ground. This attack was on account of all the Christians residing in Alexandria. The Muslims persecuted and killed over 144,000 Christians in their pillage through the city. The Muslims gave little attention to Alexandria once they conquered it and the real decline of Alexandria began.

Alexandria was rebuilt by the non-Christian survivors. When Cairo, the capital of Egypt, was built, the importance of Alexandria dropped even more. Another blow to the importance of Alexandria came when a new direct sea-route from Europe to Asia, around Africa, was opened. Alexandria was no longer an important seaport for trade. This, combined with all the other factors, caused Alexandria to forever lose its importance in Egypt.
